How to Dispute a Charge on Your Apple Card
Report the charge from your iPhone, then mail a written notice to Goldman Sachs within 60 days to protect your rights.
- Written
You saw a charge on your Apple Card that looks wrong. An Apple Card dispute starts with a report from your iPhone or iPad. The card is issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA, and that bank handles the dispute. Here is how to work through it, step by step.
What Is an Apple Card Dispute?
A dispute asks Goldman Sachs to look at a charge and decide if it was a billing error. With an Apple Card, Billing Error Notices are a type of dispute protected under the Fair Credit Billing Act. That federal law sets the rules for fixing billing errors on credit card accounts.
A dispute is not the same as asking for your money back from a store. It is a formal claim to the bank that issued the card. For more on the idea, read what a chargeback is.
Apple Card Refund vs. Dispute: What's the Difference?
Some purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store and Apple Books might be eligible for a refund from Apple. Apple takes those refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com. An Apple family organizer can ask for a refund on a purchase made by a Family Sharing member. Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update on a refund request.
A dispute goes to Goldman Sachs instead. Use a refund when Apple sold you the item and you want your money back. Use a dispute when the charge itself looks wrong.
Valid reasons to dispute an Apple Card charge
Regulation Z lists what counts as a billing error:
- a charge not made by you or someone allowed to use the card
- a charge for the wrong amount
- goods or services not accepted or not delivered as agreed
- a payment or credit the statement fails to show properly
- a math error the card issuer made on a statement
- a charge you ask the card issuer to explain, with documents as proof
One thing does not count. Regulation Z does not treat a complaint about the quality of something you accepted as a billing error. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says defective goods or services may need a different dispute process. See more on valid reasons to dispute a charge.
How to dispute an Apple Card charge (step by step)
- Check the charge first. Apple Card Family members should check if another member made the charge before reporting it.
- Decide if a refund from Apple fits. Apple says you can't ask for a refund on a pending charge until you get an email receipt.
- Report the transaction issue from your iPhone or iPad. The report goes to Goldman Sachs.
- Follow up in writing. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says to call the card company about a problem charge right away. It also says the cardholder must send a written billing error notice to protect their rights.

How to send a written billing error notice to Goldman Sachs
With an Apple Card, Billing Error Notices must be in writing and mailed to Goldman Sachs Bank USA. Regulation Z says the notice must reach the address the card issuer gives for billing errors.
The notice must let the bank identify your name and account number. It should give the error's type, date and amount, and why you think it is wrong. Regulation Z lets a card issuer refuse notices written on the payment slip, if its billing rights statement says so.
Regulation Z gives you 60 days to get the written notice to the card issuer. The clock starts when the card issuer sends the first statement that shows the error. The Fair Credit Billing Act counts the sixty days from the same point. Learn more about how long you have to dispute a charge.
What happens after you dispute an Apple Card charge?
Regulation Z gives the card issuer 30 days after it receives the notice to confirm it in writing. It can skip that written reply if it resolves the error within those 30 days.
Then the bank investigates. Regulation Z says a card issuer must do a reasonable investigation before it finds there was no error. It cannot deny a claim only because you did not sign a sworn statement or file a police report.

How long does an Apple Card dispute take?
Regulation Z gives the card issuer 2 complete billing cycles after it receives the notice to resolve the error. It must resolve the error no later than 90 days after it receives the notice. The Fair Credit Billing Act sets the same limit. More detail is in how long a credit card dispute takes.
What are your rights during an Apple Card dispute?
Regulation Z sets these rules while the card issuer looks into the charge:
- You need not pay the disputed amount or its related charges during the dispute.
- The bank cannot try to collect the disputed amount during the dispute, such as in court.
- Holding back the amount cannot add finance charges to the rest of the balance.
- The bank cannot report you as late for not paying the disputed amount.
- The bank cannot close or limit your account because you used these rights in good faith.
The rest of the bill is still due. The bank can collect the part not in dispute, and it can count the disputed amount against your credit limit.
What if Goldman Sachs finds no error?
Regulation Z says a card issuer that finds no error must explain why in writing. It must send copies of its proof if you ask. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says the card company must say how much is owed and when.
If the bank never explains in writing why there was no error, it generally must credit the disputed amount. If you still owe money, Regulation Z gives you at least 10 days to pay before a bad credit report. Read more on what happens if you dispute a charge and lose.
Apple Card dispute tips and common mistakes
- Do not wait past the 60-day window. The clock starts with the statement that shows the error.
- Keep copies, and write down the dates of follow-up calls. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says to do both.
- A charge you already paid can still be disputed. The money likely comes back only after the bank agrees with you.
- If you find there was no error, Regulation Z lets you withdraw the notice by phone, electronically or in writing.
- If Apple approves a refund, the money might take more time to return to your payment method.
Apple Card says you won't be liable for unauthorized transactions on your account. Report those fast, then follow the steps in how to dispute a fraudulent credit card charge.
